20 years ago (2000)

Cragun's Resort is seeking to construct an additional 9-hole golf course to add to its existing 27-hole Legacy layout in East Gull Lake. The addition would allow the resort to operate two 18-hole championship courses. The DNR and City of East Gull Lake are raising environmental concerns regarding Stephens Lake.

30 years ago (1990)

It sounds like a fairy tale, but it's true. On June 30, Ruth Flesner of Deerwood will marry Clair Claxton of Iowa, the man she began dating 50 years ago before WWII came along. The long war separation caused them to drift apart. Both married others, but both lost their spouses. A chance meeting has brought them together again.

40 years ago (1980)

County court Judge Henry W. Longfellow, 65, announced he will retire this fall and not seek re-election. Longfellow has served as probate, juvenile and county court judge for 24 years, and as municipal judge before that. He graduated from Northwestern University where he was an All-Big Ten end on the football team.

60 years ago (1960)

(Photo) This nice string of walleyes was caught two nights ago on Sibley Lake by Don and Myrt Schmidt of Pequot Lakes. They were still-fishing in seven feet of water from about 7 to 9:30 p.m. Largest walleye went 7-11, with the others ranging from four to five pounds.

80 years ago (1940)

Paul Bajula, Brainerd, was returning home at 2 a.m. today when he was blinded by lights of an oncoming car at the Oak Street crossing of the M&I Railway line. His car was hit by a train and dragged 150 feet up the tracks, turning over in the process. Bajula stepped out without a scratch.

100 years ago (1920)

At last the Dispatch has found a man who says this constant rainy weather just suits him fine. He's not a farmer or businessman, but rather Supt. O'Brien, who is now completing the erection of the concrete water tower near the depot. He said the weather is perfect for curing the cement structure.
