20 years ago (2000)

After a long tug-of-war over annexation, Brainerd and Baxter have come to a tentative agreement over a boundary line running through Unorganized Territory, north of the two cities. If the proposal is accepted by both city councils, it will save each about $300,000 it would take to go through hearings with Minn. Planning to reach a decision.

30 years ago (1990)

Chris Carlson, 25, of Elk River, is the leader after one day of the Midwest Regional Walleye Tournament on Mille Lacs with a total of 12.46 pounds. Merrifield's Gary Roach is in 10th place with a total of 10.0 pounds. Last Year's winner, Steve Fellegy of Aitkin, is sitting in 128th place.

40 years ago (1980)

Bob Kautz, assistant Crow Wing County Attorney, has announced he will file for the position of county judge being vacated by the retiring Judge Henry Longfellow. The position is a six-year term. Kautz is a graduate of William Mitchell School of Law and has been involved in many local activities.

60 years ago (1960)

Mikle Setula, 83, a partially blind former Brainerd policeman, has offered to donate 30 acres of land he owns on Ruth Lake to anyone who will build a home for the elderly on it. Setula is a pioneer resident on the lake and lived there summers. His attorney says the land is valued at $40,000.

80 years ago (1940)

“Goofy golf,” - which means hitting off rubber tees, shooting through barrels, knocking golf balls into buckets, etc. – will be played at Breezy Point during their July 4th celebration. Breezy pro Horter McVeigh says the entry fee of $2.50 will include prizes, plus free beer on every tee.

100 years ago (1920)

Some sections of town complain of bicycle riding on sidewalks. But the Southside has the star violator in the shape of a man who runs his motorcycle at full speed on the sidewalks of S. 8th Street at night. Any pedestrian hit would be torn to pieces. Southsiders may lay for him with clubs on his next appearance on the sidewalks.
