20 years ago (2000)

A Montessori school will open in Brainerd this fall. The Christian-oriented school will be housed at Park United Methodist Church but has no affiliation with a specific denomination. Mary Theresa Anderson, school principal, said, “We've had parents in Brainerd asking us to open here for 20 years.”

30 years ago (1990)

Brainerd Mayor Bob Olson said that the city may be in violation of state law in its use of revenues from a gambling tax. The tax, which generated $31,000 for the city last year, may only be used to enforce gambling laws. Olson has asked Police Chief Ralph Hitchens for an accounting of how the money was spent.

40 years ago (1980)

It's not nice to steal motorcycles – especially when they belong to a Twin Cities motorcycle gang. The BPM's club was staying near Garrison when a cycle belonging to a member was stolen. It was found the next day and the thief was brought back to the campground, where members said they planned to lynch him until sheriff's deputies arrived.

60 years ago (1960)

Lionel Tougas, Route 2, reported to Sheriff Al Krueger that a pair of dogs has raided his sheep pen for the third time since spring, killing five and wounding others. Tougas described the dogs as a light German shepherd and a mongrel. Sheriff Krueger said Tougas shot at the dogs, but missed.

80 years ago (1940)

100 years ago (1920)

Winston Van Walk, 16, was accidentally shot by his 5-year-old brother Jimmie last night when the younger boy spied the rifle and pulled the trigger. The bullet passed through the body, just missing the spine, and lodged in his right thigh. Winston is in strong physical condition due to sports and is expected to recover.
