20 years ago (2000)

Spectators filled Don Adamson Field for the 9th Annual Relay for Life. About 150 cancer survivors began the relay at 7 p.m. July 28. Then, 53 teams of from 10 to 18 people walked around the track through the night. Chair Kathy Buxton said the event raised $129,400 to surpass their goal of $100,000.

30 years ago (1990)

The team of Rick Sorenson, John Maxie, Dick Breen and Don Sellnow finished first with a 14-under-par 57 in the Oldsmobile Scramble at Brainerd Golf Club. Brainerd pro Mark Johnson will join them as they compete in the 34-team sectional at Oxbow Country Club near Fargo, N.D.

40 years ago (1980)

Vandalism that tore up three greens at Brainerd Country Club appears to have been just the tip of the iceberg. Vandals, perhaps the same ones, drove a car over four greens at Madden's on Pine Beach. The same tactic was used at Garrison Golf Club, almost obliterating two greens, and there was damage at Mille Lacs Country Club.

60 years ago (1960)

(Photo) Chief Deputy Sheriff Chuck Warnberg points to the ragged door frame of Harold's Package Liquor in Baxter where a safe containing $1,300 in cash and checks was stolen last night. The door on the east side was jimmied and the safe dragged through and loaded into or onto a vehicle.

80 years ago (1940)

Score keepers will have to pay attention in the semi-finals of the annual Brainerd Country Club golf tournament. Gene Wright will meet Wally Engbretson, while his brother Frank Wright will meet Ralph Engebretson. Wally and Ralph are not related; note the slight difference in spelling of their names.

100 years ago (1920)

Neil O'Brien, son of Con O'Brien, was married to Sadie Calhoun of Duluth. They left on the S.S. Noronic for Detroit enroute to the east, where they will spend a month. Upon their return they will go to their summer place on Bay Lake for a month, and will be at home at No. 1 Bluff Avenue after October 1st.
