April Erfurth, longtime resident of the Brainerd area, has been selected to lead the Montessori class that will open in Brainerd this September. Erfurth has a degree from the College of St. Scholastica and received her Montessori teaching certificate from Southwest Training Center.

30 years ago (1990)

Wal-Mart Stores, the nation's No. 3 retailer, officially announced plans to build a store on the west side of Hwy 371 North in Baxter next year. A sign at the site has been up for some time so the news was anti-climactic. The 91,000 square-foot store is expected to provide 274 jobs for area residents.

60 years ago (1960)

Lightning struck a roof-mounted TV antenna at the Andy Johnson home on Whipple Lake yesterday afternoon, burning out all electrical circuits in the upper part of the house. The phone was dead, causing Mrs. Johnson to drive two miles to a neighbor's house. Neighbors helped firemen save many articles of furniture.

80 years ago (1940)

A record opening day crowd of 3,500 were at opening sessions of the county fair, with the fair board optimistically forecasting even larger crowds for the second and third days. Crowds were praising the many exhibits, all housed in the newly constructed buildings. Grandstand attractions were also popular.

100 years ago (1920)

Brainerd has suffered from a gas shortage for two days. Yesterday, restaurants, hotels, bakeries and homes were without gas, and cold lunches were the rule instead of hot meals. The Dispatch had to switch to gasoline to heat the lead for its type, causing problems for both news and ads.
