A holiday luncheon gathering of the Brainerd Rotary Club at the Moose Lodge is being investigated to find out why 31 of the 40 people became ill. The Minn. Dept. of Health is investigating what appears to be an E. coli outbreak. The Moose Club, which was serving hamburgers and cole slaw, passed a health inspection in the fall.
30 years ago (1991)
Nate Berg, a 13-year-old from Wisconsin, has gone fishing for 1,000 straight days. He's been interviewed by NBC-TV, various magazines, and has a letter from Pres. Bush. But his biggest thrill was fishing with pro fisherman Babe Winkelman in Brainerd. On that trip he caught his biggest largemouth, 5-8, and will appear on Babe's TV show.
40 years ago (1981)
A rural Merrifield man's attempt to thaw frozen water pipes backfired in a freak accident that gutted his home. R.C. Stropp started a small fire with newspaper over the frozen pipes. But the furnace started, and its fan drew the flames into the house. When he opened the basement door there was a wall of black smoke.
60 years ago (1961)
The pickup truck, from which three teenagers escaped when it plunged into Gull Lake, ended up in mud under 70 feet of water. Brainerd skin diver Bill Matthies said it was his toughest dive yet to get it back up. He fought cold water, zero visibility and the possibility of the bends – plus, he got his lifeline caught and had to cut it.

100 years ago (1921)
A mixup between a bicycle and car a mile out on the Oak Street Road happened night before last. Lou Silverman in his Buick pulled left to pass John Butala, who also pulled left, on his bike which had no lights. Car and bike both went into the ditch, the bike smashed and car losing a wheel. Butala is bruised and in hospital.
