Sandy O'Day won her fourth straight women's club championship, and her sixth in the past seven years, last week at Pine Meadows in Brainerd. She was also champion in 1982. Verna Miller, the 1993 champ, was runner-up. Darlene Palmer, winner in 1976, 1978 and 1996, placed third.

Businessman Mike Wise of Spectrum Sign Corp. is looking into the possibility of buying the former Elks Building at the northeast corner of 6th and Laurel as a new headquarters for his company. Appearing before the Brainerd EDA to discuss parking, Wise said the former Dispatch building to the north could provide parking if the price was reasonable.
40 years ago (1980)
A state noise expert suggested a remedy to the noise issue at Brainerd International Raceway is to discontinue races involving un-muffled vehicles at the track. BIR president Dick Roe said that such a remedy would shut down the track's six major events and likely spell the demise of the facility.
60 years ago (1960)
(Photo) Ernest Palmer, the rural mail carrier on Route 5 for the past 42 years, sorted his last batch of mail yesterday prior to making his final mail delivery before retiring. When Route 5 was first designated, Palmer made his deliveries by horse and buggy. Today he delivers to 465 families across 87.5 miles.
80 years ago (1940)
Walt Stevens, city editor of the Dispatch, awarded the sing trophy to representatives from Southeast Brainerd during the final band concert of the year last night. They also won last year's trophy. In 1937 and 1938, singers from Northeast took the title. Three members of the Brainerd Municipal Band served as judges.
100 years ago (1920)
An Elcar automobile, driven at a high rate of speed near midnight last night, is reported to have torn off the east railing of the small bridge at the south end of the 13th Street cement road. The car went into the ditch and turned turtle. It is a miracle no one was killed, and an inquiry at hospitals said no one was brought for treatment.
