Marlin Wicklund, 57, was found guilty by a jury of making terroristic threats and assaulting his wife during a 19-hour stand-off with law officers at his trailer home. In his defense, Wicklund had claimed that Sheriff Frank Ball and other law officers had conspired to get him convicted of a felony so he couldn't run for sheriff this fall.

“We played a lot better tonight and got good running from all our backs,” said Warrior coach Ron Stolski, as Brainerd beat C-I, 27-7. Brainerd was simply too big for the Rangers, who had only four players weighing over 170. Rick Sweet caught two TD passes from QB Mark Muesing.

(Adv.) Tickets go on sale today for the Lakes Area Music Assn. 1960-61 Season. Adults $7.50 – Students $3.00. Featured attraction is the Oct. 1st World Premier performance of the Minn. Symphony Orchestra under new conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Tickets sold until seating capacity is reached.

80 years ago (1940)

(Photo) Shown in this photo is what may be the first automobile bought by a Brainerd resident. It is a classy 1907 Rambler, purchased by Charles Ritter, who is seated at the wheel. The occasion is the 1907 Labor Day Parade, and it won first prize of $50 for the International Moulders Union members who marched behind it.

100 years ago (1920)

Special Officer Boyd and his assistant Indian Agents raided a still in a dense brushy area north of Wolford, seizing it and 25 gallons of freshly run raisin moonshine. A large Chandler car stood nearby but could not be seized as it had no liquor in it. The man operating the still ran, sounding like a moose dashing through the brush.
