It was unanimous. Residents and area officials would like to keep the C. Elmer Anderson Memorial Highway billboard-free. The Crow Wing Twp. board voted to send a letter to the county board and the county planning commission urging the billboard ban. Township residents spoke out at the meeting urging the action.
30 years ago (1990)
A man who spent part of Saturday night handcuffed to a fence at BIR told county authorities that he didn't want to press charges against the raceway or security guards. Sheriff Frank Ball said the security personnel were out of line to do this. The man was drunk and drove an ATV through the pits and infield area, striking a race car.
40 years ago (1980)
Police say a boy, age 12, simply walked into a store, filled a cart with electronics and wheeled it out to a waiting car. The boy was one member of a shoplifting ring of 18 – with 13 of them juveniles – working out of a SE Brainerd home. Police had watched the house for some time before making a raid and recovering goods from many stores.
60 years ago (1960)
Three C-I youths pleaded guilty to unlawful assembly and were fined $75 each for their part in a gun duel with three juveniles from Deerwood. The shoot-out, with no injuries, occurred after an altercation at a drive-in theater. The juveniles fired 14 shots, striking the C-I car and blowing out a tire. The C-I men used a shotgun on the Deerwood car.
80 years ago (1940)
Enrollment figures for 1940-41 released by school officials reveal the number of students is virtually the same as last year – 2,639 now and 2,643 last year. This includes 79 students at the junior college, up five from last year. Grades 9 through 12 total 811 students.
100 years ago (1920)
A tourist stopped at the Sherlund gas station last night and was filling his tank when he decided to light a match to see how much gas he had. It lit the fumes, the tank belched fire and the man's clothes caught fire. Louis Sherlund put out all fires with an extinguisher. Five cars waiting in line for gas crashed into each other trying to escape.
