Brainerd High School graduate Bob Rofidal, a 1969 graduate of the University of Minnesota, has been named president of the Univ. of Minn. M Club. Rofidal, marketing director for a Twin Cities accounting firm, took charge of the 4,000 member club in July. He was a baseball player at the U, playing on the 1964 national championship team.
30 years ago (1990)
A forum featuring the three primary candidates for Crow Wing County sheriff was planned yesterday at Franklin Junior High by “We the People” and by “Crow Wing County Concerned Citizens.” None of the three – Frank Ball, Dick Ross and Jon Main – showed up. Ball and Ross did send written answers to prepared question.
40 years ago (1980)
There are close votes, and sometimes they are a surprise. Sunday liquor was approved by a margin of 121-120 in Bay Lake Township in yesterday's election. “We were rather surprised,” said Clerk Dwayne Noggle. “A similar measure was defeated less than a year ago.”
60 years ago (1960)
There's nothing like experience in the game of football, and the Warriors are getting it the hard way. They bowed 19-0 to a big, but slow, Duluth Central team last night. Hampered by the loss of fullback Dale Brown, out with a shoulder injury, speedy Jerry Chisholm filled in but the offense couldn't get rolling.
80 years ago (1940)
Establishment of a new municipal airport several miles east of Brainerd is being promoted by a Civic Assn. committee. The facility would be on a section of tax forfeited land about three miles east of the city. National defense considerations mean the federal government will pay 75 percent of the cost of improving the airport.
100 years ago (1920)
The newly paved Kindred Street will be celebrated by the NE Brainerd Improvement League. There will be a parade with many cars decorated with flags, plus a fire engine, and a speech by Mayor Little. Afterward, there will be a dance as two blocks of the new pavement are roped off, with music by the Brainerd Band.
