20 years ago (2000)

Brainerd High School students not only surpassed other students in the state, but also in the world in advanced placement tests, high school principal Steve Razidlo reported to the school board. The number of students scoring a three or better were 62.1 percent in Minnesota, 63.9 percent in the world, but 71 percent in Brainerd.

30 years ago (1990)

When “Up With People” brings its family entertainment show to Brainerd next week, a Brainerd man will be on stage as an alumnus of the cast to perform again. Brent Gunsbury, 21, is currently a junior at Concordia College, Moorhead. Last year he traveled with the troupe, performing in 140 shows.

40 years ago (1980)

A Crosslake area man was fined $30 in court yesterday for speeding. He had been apprehended by the State Patrol. After leaving the courtroom, witnesses said he used his car to ram a State Patrol car twice, then fled. He was arrested just south of Nisswa by the State Patrol.

60 years ago (1960)

Bud Chapman of Minneapolis Golf Club cruised to the men's title in the Madden's Pine Beach Golf Tuorney, topping Aitkin's Vic Erickson 3-and-2 in the final. Chapman never lost a hole in the tournament and was six-under par. Several Brainerd golfers played well, including Skeeto Peterson, Chuck Chalberg, Georgia Benson and Beatsie Fieldman.

80 years ago (1940)

Installation of 80 new streetlights downtown proceeds today, with the old lights being placed on Washington Street. The new lights in the business district have two globes. The one over the street burns all night, while the one over the sidewalk turns off at 1 a.m., saving electricity.

100 years ago (1920)
