No decision has yet been made on the location for a Differential GPS tower, but there are four options within 40 miles of Brainerd, including one near Fort Ripley and two in Cass County. The 299-foot tower is part of a 66-tower national system that is far more accurate than normal GPS towers.

30 years ago (1990)

Severe weather forced the Brainerd and Rocori girls' swim teams to seek momentary shelter in the high school locker room. But they returned after 15 minutes to see the Warriors crush the Spartans 128-57. The Warriors were a force, winning 11 of the 12 events in the conference meet.

40 years ago (1980)

The high cost of busing students hit home as the school board learned of a projected $235,000 deficit in the transportation fund. Increased gas prices are the culprit, and a fuel escalator clause will kick in if prices go even higher. There was a double whammy as state aids were reduced by 5.3 percent.

60 years ago (1960)

Proponents of the $35,000 bond issue for more fire equipment were smiling today after voters approved the measure by a narrow margin, 1,454 to 1,369. Fire Chief Ray Shortridge says he is already drawing up specs for a new 1,000-gallon pumper truck that is desperately needed.

80 years ago (1940)

Brainerd police learned today that a couple held in jail here for ten days and then released, were wanted by the FBI for jail breaking and other crimes in New York. Fingerprints taken from the man and woman positively identify them as the culprits, but word from J. Edgar Hoover arrived too late.

100 years ago (1920)

Pupils at Lincoln grade school appear to evidence too much enthusiasm in their time on the playground. Yesterday, Bernie Samuelson fell off a seesaw and broke his right arm. Today, Marvin Turner was knocked unconscious by a flying swing and taken to hospital. The kids are wondering who is next to be wounded.
