20 years ago (2000)

A former Brainerd resident now living in Florida may suddenly have a lot of friends back here this week. Michael Schmitz, a 1994 Brainerd high school grad, will appear on the TV show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” on Oct. 4. The show will be taped in the afternoon and shown that evening.

30 years ago (1990)

Officials of Target Stores confirmed today that they will build a store in Baxter, one of four they will build in the state next year. The site will be on Hwy 371 just north of Bonanza Restaurant. It will be a small market prototype design of 80,000 square feet and will employ about 150 full and part-time people.

40 years ago (1980)

A new 80-bed nursing home and adjacent 60-unit apartment complex for Brainerd received initial approval by members of the regional health review agency on a 13-3 vote. The approval was for a proposal by the Helgeson Co. of Sartell. Moments later, the agency turned down a similar request by another firm by the same vote margin.

60 years ago (1960)

80 years ago (1940)

Faced with a drastic shortage of manganese, war department officials may focus more attention on construction of a huge ore washing plant on the Cuyuna Range, which is noted for the quantity and quality of this mineral. It is used in the production of high-grade steel for making war armaments.

100 years ago (1920)

Figures based on the U.S. Government census give Crow Wing County a 1920 population of 24,566. This represents an increase of 7,705, or 45.7 percent, since the census of 1910.
