The nursing shortage may be like a tsunami, with the critical wave still offshore. St. Joseph's Medical Center sees signs, and the Univ. of Minn. says there are 1,700 nursing jobs empty in the state. HR Director Dale Benson says having a training school here helps Brainerd, but the problem now is in Fargo and the Twin Cities.

30 years ago (1990)

Police have asked for help from anyone who saw or heard anything peculiar this morning or late last night on Brainerd streets. At least 23 cars parked along Brainerd streets had windows smashed or shot out, probably with a pellet gun. Suspects may have been driving a small, grey 4-door vehicle.

40 years ago (1980)

William Graham, 75, a founder of First Federal Savings & Loan here, died today at his Gull Lake home. He had graduated from Brainerd's Washington High School and the Univ. of Minnesota. His other activities included being a co-founder and co-owner of KLIZ Radio in Brainerd.

60 years ago (1960)

Baxter Commercial Club members voted to hire a secretary to fill out tax reduction forms after a 2-1/2 hour meeting on tax reappraisals in the village. The new appraisals mean that some properties in Baxter will see a valuation increase of more than 100 percent, and some tax bills will go up more than 200 percent.

80 years ago (1940)

The Warrior football team attended the Minnesota vs. Nebraska football game last Saturday in Minneapolis, witnessing the Gopher 13-7 victory. Gene Bierhaus, former Warrior player, was unable to compete because of a leg injury, but the team got a message to him and wished him well in recovery.

100 years ago (1920)

The power lines burned off by the fire at the NP Railway shops are quickly being restored. They had cut power to the depot, the hospital, the YMCA and railway crossing lights. It seemed half the town turned out to witness the fire two nights ago. Several men climbed the new water tower and said the fire view was spectacular.
