A student who brought an unloaded handgun to Brainerd High School on Oct. 9 has been suspended for 10 days. The gun was retrieved without incident after a concerned student told Principal Steve Razidlo about the gun. The student said he brought the gun out of personal concerns.

30 years ago (1990)

It seems like an eternity that Turena Johnson has been running cross country for Brainerd. The Warrior Athlete of the Week has already notched conference and region titles, plus high finishes at state. This year the sophomore has won five of seven races and finished second in the other two.

40 years ago (1980)

(Photo) Potlatch enlisted the help of a helicopter yesterday to install six guide assembly units and five gates at the paper mill dam. The new equipment will replace the stop-log gates which are used to control high water levels at the dam during spring months.

60 years ago (1960)

Einar Anderson, county auditor, made county budget figures public today showing $1,241,000 collectible in taxes. The budget, approved by the county board, is considerably less than last year due to a $72,000 reduction in school transportation funds after the consolidation of 26 rural school districts into the Brainerd district.

80 years ago (1940)

Brainerd's National Guard tank company benefited by nearly $100 when Lee Williams and his orchestra played for the benefit dance sponsored by the Jaycees at the armory. During intermission the Brainerd Ladies' Drum and Bugle Corps showed new marching maneuvers taught them by Capt. E.B. Miller, and drew huge applause.

100 years ago (1920)

A fire of unknown origin destroyed the Joncas Sawmill on the southwest shore of Rice Lake yesterday. All that remains is a tangled mass of wreckage. The mill employed 35 men sawing 20,000 board feet of lumber per day. When the sawdust piles ignited, the city was bathed in smoke.
