20 years ago (2000)

It's enough steak to make Paul Bunyan's mouth water. It's taken 14 years, but Steve Tufte, owner of the Butcher Block restaurant in Pequot Lakes, has served his 100th ton of steak. The restaurant allows patrons to cook their own steaks around a 4-foot by 8-foot grill in the middle of the dining room.

30 years ago (1990)

Chalk one up for the Warrior strength and conditioning program. Operating against Monticello offensive and defensive tackles who weighed at least 245 pounds, Brainerd ran around, through and over the Magic in a 34-0 conference win. “Quickness beats size,” said linebacker Trevor Wood, as Brainerd again gained over 300 yards.

40 years ago (1980)

A teenager was hospitalized in critical condition after he apparently pulled the primer on an explosive device and it exploded in his hand. His three younger brothers suffered lesser injuries. The device was among rifle shells, rockets and even a bazooka shell that the boys had scavenged from nearby Camp Ripley.

60 years ago (1960)

80 years ago (1940)

Assuming the same duties that were his a quarter-century ago during the World War in 1917, Dr. John Thabes, Sr., Brainerd physician, will assist local draft boards with medical questions. He will head a medical board for Crow Wing and other area counties that will make a final decision on difficult medical questions for draftees.

100 years ago (1920)

The storm yesterday afternoon blew down scores of telephone and telegraph poles south of Little Falls, putting an end to news service by wire. To serve its readers, the Dispatch had United Press route its wire service from St. Paul to Fargo and then to Brainerd in time to include in this edition.
