1985 Brainerd High School grad Cindy Williams has turned her passion for hair styling and makeup into a Hollywood career. Williams, who has worked with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen and others, has now won an Emmy for her makeup on the TV series, “The X-Files.”
30 years ago (1990)
Warrior football defensive coordinator Steve Nunnink couldn't recall the last time Brainerd recorded two consecutive shutouts. The Warriors blanked St. Cloud Apollo 27-0 to finish the regular season at 7-1 overall, outscoring opponents 163-25. They outgained Apollo 391 yards to 162.
40 years ago (1980)
Viewing moto-cross racing on TV stirred young David Hewitt to one day enter this type of motorcycle competition. On his Honda 80cc, David has taken trophies in 21 of the 26 District 23 races he competed in this summer, including two firsts and 10 seconds. Up to three dozen racers compete against him in his class.
60 years ago (1960)
Though there is only one contest pending in the county election, it looks like a record vote for Brainerd and the county. Registrations are way up at city hall, with expectation of 7,000 compared to the normal 6,000. Einer Anderson, county auditor, says requests for absentee ballots are running far ahead of normal.
80 years ago (1940)
Staples completely outplayed Brainerd in the final home football game of the season, winning the contest 37-12. It was a case of a much bigger and more experienced team playing hard and taking advantage of every Warrior mistake. Brainerd's two TDs came in the final quarter, with HB Spike Hanson leading the way.
100 years ago (1920)
A $2,500 cigarette robbery has stirred Brainerd. It occurred four days ago at the Brainerd Grocery Co. warehouse on Front Street, but police asked it be kept quiet while they worked on clues. Thieves broke a window and got away with 300,000 cigarettes, all best selling brands. Police say the culprits knew the building layout.
