(Photo) Members of the Steve Shepherd family are illuminated by the sign that used to adorn the Viking Tire store on Washington Street. Shepherd bought the sign when Oscar “Bud” Henderson closed the business five years ago. He's displaying the sign in the family backyard on Highland Scenic Drive this football season.

30 years ago (1991)

Dina Kangas, the 6-1 senior center for the UMD women's basketball team, scored 30 points in a win over Winona State to set the state all-time scoring record of 2,367 points. The Pine River High School grad said “I'm glad it's over. There was a little pressure.” The previous women's record was 2,349 and the men's was 2,357.

40 years ago (1981)

(Photo) More than 200 people attended the recognition banquet for Walt Doran, Brainerd's Outstanding Citizen of the Year for 1980. Doran was “toasted and roasted” by members from 12 area organizations. He received a special commendation from Gov. Al Quie and was made honorary mayor of the town of Doran in western Minnesota.

60 years ago (1961)

Preliminary drawings for the new YMCA building have been prepared by architects Stegner-Hendrickson-McNutt. Cost of the building, exclusive of parking lot and landscaping, will be just over $300,000. The four-lane swimming pool will be 75 x 25 feet. The partial basement will house the locker rooms.

80 years ago (1941)

The crowd was in a frenzy as the Warriors and Staples had a see-saw basketball game, with Brainerd finally capturing a 37-35 win. Brainerd took the early lead and was 12 points ahead in the third quarter before turning cold. Staples roared back for a 29-28 lead. Co-captain Gene Brandt was high man with 14 points.

100 years ago (1921)

Heroic action by Mrs. Albert Allen saved her house from destruction this noon. While in the basement heating wash water on a two-burner oil stove, the stove exploded, setting fire to the staircase. She threw rugs on the stove and threw water on the stairway. Then she threw the flaming stove in a snowbank.
