20 years ago (2000)

Residents along Mapleton Road who've been waiting years for Baxter to upgrade their road will get their wish. Resident concerns have ranged from dust and washboard, to safety concerns due to blind corners. The city just got the needed right-of-way, and now needs to figure out what it will cost.

30 years ago (1990)

The discovery of 200 pieces of campaign mail in a trash can outside the Brainerd post office has sparked an investigation by the Jack Graham for County Attorney campaign committee. The post office said third class mail is discarded if found undeliverable. The mail was later found to have undeliverable addresses.

40 years ago (1980)

60 years ago (1960)

A pair of twins, age 21, and a third young man have admitted to police they broke into the Fruth Beverage warehouse early Sunday morning, but say they only took six cases of beer, part of which was recovered by police. Another young man was released when it was learned he had no connection to the robbery.

80 years ago (1940)

A total of 164 aliens have registered with the Brainerd post office, according to James Garvey. This represents just over half of the estimated people in the county who are not citizens. Filling out a form is all that is required, and aliens will then be sent a card showing they are registered.

100 years ago (1920)

The soaping and defacing of display windows on Brainerd businesses is becoming a disgrace. A band of small boys and girls is using soap, and in some cases glass cutters, to write vulgar sayings on the windows. Police will take anyone caught in the act. A trip with parents to the woodshed will be the best remedy.
