20 years ago (2000)

It's a quiet Pillager neighborhood where several residents say they no longer go for a walk. They say they are afraid of a neighbor's pets, specifically a 275-pound Siberian tiger, and a cinnamon bear. He says he's raised both together since they were cubs and that he has all necessary permits and licenses from the DNR.

30 years ago (1990)

Warrior Turena Johnson defended her Region 8AA girls' cross country title and heads back to state for the third time. The Brainerd sophomore ran 12:05 for the 3,200 meter course at Detroit Lakes. Joining her at state will be Warrior freshman Jaime Mueller, who finished fourth in 12:42.

40 years ago (1980)

Brainerd's Region 8AA tennis doubles champions, Carol Laimer and Ginny Alvarez, started strong in the state meet, winning their first match 6-2, 6-1 over an Osseo team, before dropping their second match. Region singles champ, Sue Pettit, lost her opening singles test to Hutchinson's Karen Scott 1-6, 6-7.

60 years ago (1960)

By all means enjoy watching deer, but for the sake of your hunting license, your gun and your car, don't “shine deer” at night. Game Warden pilot Bill Morris, circling his plane at 4,000 feet, can spot a shiner at night. Working by radio with wardens on the ground, he's spotted 30 violators and caught 22 of them so far.

80 years ago (1940)

Five young men from the county are in Hawaii now, traveling there as members of the Navy. They went to Great Lakes Naval Training School in August for two months training, then were sent to California and on to Hawaii. Most of the U.S. Naval fleet is stationed in Hawaii.

100 years ago (1920)

At the Brainerd Model Laundry a new water filter and water softener have been installed, enabling clothes to be rinsed cleaner and whiter. On account of this installation and repairs the laundry was closed down the past two days, but is open again today.
