20 years ago (2000)

At dusk, when the light slips away, they stand as silent sentinels of a rich mining heritage on the Cuyuna Range that faded away. And the Roosevelt School in Riverton, and Wilson School in Barrows, faded away with it. Today, weeds have taken over the sidewalks and trees crowd the exterior walls.

30 years ago (1990)

Warrior halfback Joe Diemer rushed for 223 yards and three TDs as Brainerd beat Grand Rapids 37-14 in the Section 7AA semifinal game. He also ran for two-2-point conversions. Brainerd's defense limited Grand Rapids to just 71 yards and no scores in the second half. Brainerd plays Cambridge for the section title.

40 years ago (1980)

A near-fatal power line accident prompted the Brainerd Water and Light Board to purchase some safety equipment. Three men were seriously hurt when a line they were installing at Riverton sagged and made contact with another 115,000-volt line. A line “tensioner” will help prevent that from happening.

60 years ago (1960)

80 years ago (1940)

The lottery drawing numbers for the military draft takes place in Washington, DC tomorrow, and Crow Wing County has 3,520 young men with numbers assigned to them. The order in which the numbers are drawn will determine the order in which the young men are called before their local draft board.

100 years ago (1920)

Henry White, residing near Gull Lake, has found a skunk farm where the animals are being petted and are flourishing. The location is a quarter-mile from the dam and 21 animals are being raised. The colony started with one caught in a trap and she bore a large litter. They have had no occasion to release their repellant and their fur value increases.
