Baxter police are searching for a man who assaulted a police officer early yesterday. Officer Jamie Lee saw a suspicious man near the trail's head who, when approached, ran up the Paul Bunyan Trail. Lee caught the man who then struck him in the head with a pipe. He was treated and is recovering. The man escaped.
30 years ago (1990)
From all indications voters will be deciding the Minnesota governor's race by paper ballot, according to county auditor Roy Luukkonen, after Republican John Grunseth dropped out. The punchcard ballots have already been prepared, so there will be a supplemental paper ballot for the governor's race.

(Photo) The Brainerd Kixters danceline won first place and a standing ovation when they completed their routine at Fridley Totino Grace High School. Their winning score was 118 of 120 possible points. Twenty-three teams competed in the precision high kick division. They are coached by Cindy Clough.
60 years ago (1960)
Held to just three yards rushing in a dismal first half, the Warriors trailed unbeaten Bemidji 28-6 at halftime, enroute to a decisive 41-19 season ending loss at home. Brainerd managed a bit of a comeback in the second half, following a verbal blasting from Coach Dick Lagergren, but it wasn't enough.
80 years ago (1940)
Martin Westberg held the number 158 for Crow Wing County and was the first man selected for the draft here after that number was drawn in Washington. Westberg, owner of a grocery store on S. 8th Street, is married with two children, so is unlikely to be called to serve. That honor will likely go to Arthur Hann, 25, Crosby whose number was drawn second.
100 years ago (1920)
News has been received that the remains of Private Claire Bixby, 24, of the 41st Division, who died in France of pneumonia on July 4, 1918, will soon be brought to Brainerd for burial. The body passed through New Jersey yesterday. Pvt. Bixby's body is the first to be brought back from the war zone for burial here.
