(Photo) Gisela Borgwarth of Nisswa took her daily swim in Gull Lake on Halloween. She began swimming in the North Sea off the coast of her native Germany at age 10. Borgwarth tries to swim in Gull Lake every day from May 1 to November 1, and with warm temps she may go longer this fall.

30 years ago (1990)

Penny Schmitz, United Way executive director, announced that the United Way had exceeded its 1990 fund drive goal of $200,000. To date, pledges and donations amounted to $213,502, which is about $20,000 more than it collected last year. The fund drive helps support 24 area agencies.

40 years ago (1980)

Republic Airlines has good news for travelers here – a 35 percent reduction in airfares from Brainerd to Minneapolis. Effective immediately, the one-way fare on all flights will drop from $68 to $44; round trips will go from $136 to $88. The airline says it is a test to see how much lower fares will boost airline traffic.

60 years ago (1960)

80 years ago (1940)

A freak bolt of lightning killed five cattle on the Fredstrom farm. The bolt struck one cow standing 40 feet from the barn, shot into the barn and followed the water line. The bolt skipped the first six cows, then killed two in a row, skipped four, killed one, skipped eight and killed the last. It is believed the bolt killed those drinking when the lightning hit.

100 years ago (1920)
