It was a hard-fought match that went to five games, but Central Lakes College emerged victorious in the Region 13A volleyball title game and heads to Toledo, Ohio for nationals. Coach Jane Peterson's Raiders topped Rainy River in a see-saw 15-9, 12-15, 15-5, 8-15, 15-11 battle royal.

30 years ago (1990)

They're having a political party on Tuesday at Larry and Bonnie Carlson's house. Their living room will be the Dean Lake Township's polling place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and most every adult resident will be stopping by during the day. Bonnie Carlson is the Dean Lake Township clerk.

40 years ago (1980)

A rare survivor of Brainerd's Indian past went up in smoke today. A 450-year-old elm tree, lone survivor of a triangle of trees that historian Carl Zappfe said was the site Chief Hole-in-the-Day used for tribal councils, burned to the ground. The tree, long dead and located between N. Long and Round Lakes, once stood 80 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter.

60 years ago (1960)

The Gull Lake Yacht Club recently purchased 5.3 acres on Gull and Love Lakes, with 278 feet of frontage on Gull Lake. The 200-member club bought the land from Walter Wieland. The club plans to build a dock on the property and use it for the sailboat races they sponsor.

80 years ago (1940)

Parking meters will not be installed in downtown Brainerd this year, the city council decided last night. The parking meter salesman had said the city of Stillwater was putting them in, but when that was checked out, it was discovered that the idea of meters was tabled as Stillwater merchants strongly objected.

100 years ago (1920)

Sentiment is gaining ground that the pay of election judges and clerks is entirely inadequate and should be revised at the next session of the Legislature. Pay for jurors should also be addressed. The whole wage scale set by law was framed in the early days when a dollar did more service than in these days.
