Warrior offensive tackle Trevor McCulloch made an official recruiting visit to the Univ. of Minn. last weekend and met with Gopher football coach Glen Mason. Upon return, the 6-4, 295-pound McCulloch told Brainerd coach Ron Stolski that he made a verbal commitment to play for Minnesota.
30 years ago (1991)
The Salvation Army, an organization that helps in time of need, is looking for help itself. The Army is organizing an effort to raise $405,000 to purchase and renovate the building at 424 Front Street that currently houses Minnegasco and state offices. Tom and Deb Isle have stepped forward to lead the fundraising.
40 years ago (1981)
Three inmates, one each from Pequot Lakes, Brainerd and Faribault, tried to break out of the Morrison County Jail. They overpowered the jailer as he opened their cell door. An officer was jumped and his gun taken before the three encountered another armed officer. It was drawn guns, face-to-face, before they were disarmed and captured.
60 years ago (1961)
A former Bay Lake resident, age 39, just stopped in to say hello to Sheriff Al Krueger this morning and found he had to stay. Krueger checked with the State BCA while the man waited around. In minutes he got a call from the Hastings sheriff saying the man was wanted for forgery. He's being held here til they pick him up.
80 years ago (1941)
The Brainerd Ladies' Drum and Bugle Corps prepared to join 55 other bands and drum corps and 25,000 marchers in the St. Paul Winter Carnival parade. A large delegation of Brainerdites will go along to cheer the ladies. With temps in the 40s, carnival ice sculptures and the ice palace are collapsing.
100 years ago (1921)
Yesterday a small boy was on his way to school when he fell into a water-filled hole near the school playground. Weighted down by heavy clothes, he was about to go under when a small girl grabbed his hand and held him up until adult help arrived. The hole, dug to repair a broken water main, had no barriers around it.
