20 years ago (2000)

It was a big weekend in Toledo, Ohio for the CLC Raider volleyball team. First, they defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the nation in the semis. Then, they stopped Cedar Valley College in three straight games for the national title. And to top it off, four Raiders made the all-tournament team, and coach Jane Peterson was named coach of the year.

30 years ago (1990)

The names Frankhauser, Blankenship, Cauble and Bicahlo are no strangers to Brainerd. They were involved with Colin Hall in his BITC bus project and are now under indictment by a county grand jury. Furthermore, they and 12 others were indicted by a federal grand jury for racketeering and for defrauding the Brainerd city council.

40 years ago (1980)

The Minnetonka hunter who was shot from his deer stand, then shot again as he ran for his life, had a bullet removed from near his spine at Univ. of Minn. Hospital where he is recovering. The two hunters charged with attempted murder had tried to sell the hunter a deer earlier in the day, but the Minnetonka man had refused it.

60 years ago (1960)

(Adv.) Today at the Brainerd Theatre it's a double feature: “Blackboard Jungle,” starring Glenn Ford, and “Many Rivers to Cross,” starring Robert Taylor. Starting tomorrow, “Let No Man Write My Epitaph,” featuring Shelley Winters, Ricardo Montalban, James Darren and Ella Fitzgerald. No children allowed for this film.

80 years ago (1940)

Growing in fury throughout the day, an Armistice Day blizzard whirled its devastating way out of the north to block traffic, disrupt communications, halt the mails and close all Brainerd area schools. Six and seven-foot drifts stopped even pedestrian travel as 35 mph winds whipped the snow and temps dropped rapidly to about six degrees.

100 years ago (1920)

The Armistice Day dance given at Gardner Hall by the World War Veterans was largely attended and was one of the social events of the season. The committee did wonders with the arrangements. Major John Elkins, Spanish War veteran, led the Grand Victory March at the mystic hour of 11 p.m.
