Three Brainerd area restaurants are going smoke-free tomorrow in honor of the Great American Smokeout. Perkins, Country Kitchen and the Sawmill Inn will all go smoke-free for the day. It will be the first time for the Sawmill Inn, owned by Al and Barb Gmeinder, who said it really comes down to a health issue.

A county woman sent a letter to county auditor Roy Luukkonen asking that Jack Graham not be certified as the new county attorney since he didn't live here when elected, but rather in Canada. He sent the letter to Aitkin county attorney John Leitner, who says the matter must be filed in district court to be acted upon.

(Photo) Minnewawa Lodge on Clark Lake has a new owner, Herb Brooks, the former Univ. of Minn. and Olympic hockey coach. Chuck Grillo, who manages Brooks' summer hockey camps, is shown accepting the keys from local Realtor Pat Smith. The resort will house many of the 1,300 youth who attend the hockey camp in Brainerd.
60 years ago (1960)
Three state agencies cooperated in solving the question of who set multiple fires in the Mille Lacs game refuge. The flying game warden, Bill Morris, spotted the suspect from the air and directed the Forest Rangers and Highway Patrol to where he was hidden to make the arrest. He started the fires to flush out game.
80 years ago (1940)
Sheriff Roy Wickland left today for Missouri to take custody of two Brainerd boys, ages 13 and 14, who confessed to the robbery of $4.27 from the Bedore Gas station. The boys broke in during the night, took the money, stole a delivery van from the Gustafson and Nelson Store and drove it to Missouri where state police arrested them.
100 years ago (1920)
The Mississippi River coated itself with a sheet of ice on Armistice Day, and it bids fair to last the rest of the winter. This is considerably later than 1919, when Minnesota had a premature winter which persisted in hanging on. The river channel last winter was not opened until a thaw on March 27.
