Police Chief John Bukovich of Lake Shore has a decision to make. The city council he was elected to last month says he must resign as police chief if he wants to serve on the council. Bukovich has been a law officer since 1969 and Lake Shore chief for 18 years. He's not yet decided, but said he might challenge the council's decision.

30 years ago (1990)

With Brainerd gaining the state AA semis, the Dispatch All-Area Football Team includes nine Warriors: Joe Diemer and Doug Wheeler, running backs; Chad Virnig and Tim Sweet, offensive line; Aaron Leckband, tight end; Keith Bartholomaus and Chad Jillson, defensive line; Trevor Wood, linebacker; and Jim Ernster, safety.

The Bob and Sue Huff fund has passed the $6,000 mark, reports Citizens State Bank, which is receiving donations to heart transplant patient Sue and her family. Heading the fund drive to help the Huffs is Millie Michaelis. She said they have already re-mortgaged their home with all the money going to pay bills.

60 years ago (1960)

More information in the kidnapping of Virginia Major notes that the kidnapper may have been driving a car with Canadian plates, based on conversation she heard while blindfolded when he stopped for gas. She was regularly given bitter soda which made her groggy, indicating she may have been drugged.

100 years ago (1920)

A Brainerd man was agreeably surprised when he received a $50 Liberty bond in the mail, and the writer told how his conscience made him send the money. He said he had taken $15 from the Brainerd man and the bond was to settle the debt. The Brainerd man was pleased with the $50, but has no idea who the man was that took the original $15.
