20 years ago (2000)

Bodies were flying, players were running over each other and there were even a few holding calls in Pillager. Problem was, Verndale and Pillager were playing basketball – not football. The Pillager Huskies eventually won the game 57-33, but it wasn't pretty. A total of 47 fouls were called.

30 years ago (1990)

An intense beam of light is making surgery more convenient for some patients at St. Joseph's Medical Center. The recently purchased $50,000 carbon dioxide laser is the first available here, and allows physicians like Lyle MacIver, ob/gyn specialist, to do procedures here instead of sending patients to St. Cloud.

40 years ago (1980)

Walt Doran, a veteran of volunteer work in the Brainerd area for many years, has been selected as the 1980 Outstanding Citizen of the Year. A 16-member committee chose Doran from 18 other nominees considered by the panel. Doran is the long-time head of Brainerd Savings and Loan.

60 years ago (1960)

(Photo) Children at 8th and Laurel Streets yelled and screamed as Santa arrived today via helicopter for the annual Christmas kick-off. Leaving his reindeer at the North Pole, Santa ducked under the still turning helicopter blades and entered a jeep for the ride to the Ransford Hotel. Children were treated to a free movie and candy.

80 years ago (1940)

Hitting the arctic mark of 24 below zero here last night, the temperature remained frigid in the coldest pre-Christmas weather in many years. Old-timers were pressed to think of colder weather. Even worse, the temps have remained below zero for two days. The cold wave has killed three in the state.

100 years ago (1920)

It is expected that a large and interested group of women will gather at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Elks Hall in the interest of the League of Women Voters. Now that women have the vote, it is expected they will become conscious of the power in their hands and a desire to use this power intelligently.
