Pillager students were back in school today after being dismissed early yesterday when a student found a bomb threat note in a boys' bathroom. Rumors of the threat caused the school to have students walk to area churches for safety while police searched the building. No bomb was found.
30 years ago (1991)
Heather MacIver won her first individual title of the season at the Bemidji Invitational cross country ski meet. She finished with a time of 19:04 on the five kilometer course at Buena Vista. Bemidji won both the boys' and girls' races, with Brainerd finishing second in each.
40 years ago (1981)
Brainerd won the opening game in its 2nd Annual Holiday Hockey Tournament, beating Brooklyn Center 7-1 after a sluggish start. But it was Eden Prairie, the tourney champ last year, that beat the Warriors 5-3 in the final. Brainerd led 2-0 after firing 25 shots on goal in the first period, but Eden Prairie rallied, scoring four times in the second.
60 years ago (1961)
Thanks to August Erdmann, the hundreds of fisherman that use the “fisherman's bridge” at the confluence of the Gull and Crow Wing Rivers had fresh, clean water to drink. He got a sandpoint, piping and pump installed there at the campground. Now, vandals have broken the concrete apron and stolen the pipe and sandpoint.
80 years ago (1941)
The ice rink at the fill grounds between North and Northeast Brainerd is now ready for use, and the warming house will be operating by tonight. Work on the rink had been held up until the ground froze as it would not take a coating of ice. But the rink has been flooded several times now.
100 years ago (1921)
From the seven bids tendered, the city council has approved purchase of 1,000 feet of Eureka fire hose at $1.50 per foot from the U.S. Rubber Co. It will withstand up to 400 pounds of pressure as the water main pressure is much increased by the new water tower. The council also purchased two night clubs (sticks) for the police.
