20 years ago (2001)

After several mild winters with little snow, nearly 100 nordic skiers converged on the Northland Arboretum's abundant snow for the Brainerd Pursuit Invitational. The Brainerd girls were fourth, led by Anna Mangan, then Lindsey Mangan and Christina Roberts. Warrior boys were fifth, led by Ben Endreson and his brother, Chris.

30 years ago (1991)

History will be made next week when newcomers Cheryl Gelbmann and Barb Uppgaard join incumbent Mary Koep to form Minnesota's first female majority on a county board, as confirmed by the Assn. of Minn. Counties. Gelbmann is representing Brainerd and Uppgaard represents Pequot Lakes area.

40 years ago (1981)

For Tom Feierabend, a little thing like a separated shoulder is annoying, but no reason to stop snowmobile racing. Despite two pins in his shoulder, the 38-year-old will be on the starting line for the Winnipeg to St. Paul 500 race. He was injured last week when another sled hit his. No problem. He climbed back on and went another 100 miles.

60 years ago (1961)

Brainerd's first baby of the year waited nearly 23 hours to make his appearance. But at 9:55 p.m., David James Simmonds – at 9 pounds, one ounce – was born to Mr. and Mrs. Milton Simmonds of Route 4. They were already the parents of three other boys. The lucky parents will win prizes from 20 local merchants.

80 years ago (1941)

A recommendation has been made that $250,000 be allocated to build a pilot plant near Trommald and refine low-grade Cuyuna Range manganese ore into high-grade ore. If successful, millions would be invested to build a plant near the mines that could then replace imported manganese ore.

100 years ago (1921)

New Year's Eve was quietly observed in the city. There was the watch night service at the Congregational Church, where many churches joined in. At Gardner Auditorium, the machinists union staged a successful ball, with the eight-piece Blue Ribbon Orchestra providing the music.
