20 years ago (2001)

In the last five games – four of them victories – the Warrior girls' hockey team has allowed just three goals. Brainerd goalie Mandy Hanson continued to benefit from her teammates' defensive work as they allowed only 15 shots against her while unloading 33 shots on Detroit Lakes. Natalie Dunphy scored twice as Brainerd beat Detroit Lakes 3-0.

30 years ago (1991)

The Warrior girls' basketball team opened the season with two losses, but with their 52-39 victory over Monticello, have now won seven straight. Shelly Breen, nursing an injured finger most of the season, scored a season-high 17 points. Coach Jim Gogolin said “we played very inconsistently tonight.”

40 years ago (1981)

60 years ago (1961)

Turns out it wasn't vandals who removed the well at “fisherman's bridge” camping area by the Gull and Crow Wing River – it was Minn. Power & Light. The pump was on their land and they feared liability if the well became contaminated and someone became ill from drinking the water.

80 years ago (1941)

Clifford Weber of Verndale will be questioned about breaking-into a cottage on the north shore of Whitefish Lake. Sheriff Roy Wickland said Weber will be released from prison in Alberta, Canada, next week and will be questioned at Wadena County, where he is wanted for breaking out of jail at Long Prairie.

100 years ago (1921)

For some time Brainerd has been given a day diet of spring water pumped from the city wells on the south side, and a night diet of river water pumped from the Mississippi. Commencing today the city will have spring water 24 hours per day. For the first time since its founding, Brainerd is free of river water, and its health should improve.
