20 years ago (2001)

They may or may not be ready for prime time, but the city council members will debut tonight on Charter cable's Channel 8. The 73-minute meeting from Jan. 2 is edited, with comments, to a 30-minute production by Matt Taylor. Taylor, 28, was an unsuccessful candidate for city council.

30 years ago (1991)

Lance Hoff had a career night. The Warrior junior swimmer set pool records in the 50 free (21.74), the 100 free (48.90) and helped the 200 free relay team – with Steve Piepgras, Dave Wise and Mark Schmitz – to a pool record (1:33.27). Hoff's 50 free time is fastest in the state this year, and his 100 free is second.

40 years ago (1981)

Darla Magtibay found the range for 22 points and got scoring help from Kari Larson and Carla Sorenson in the fourth quarter to help Brainerd to a narrow 47-46 win at Willmar. The victory helped Coach Roger Nibbe's squad even its record at 4-4 on the year and 2-2 in the conference.

60 years ago (1961)

Huge fish are being registered in the Lassig's Winter Fishing Contest here. Four walleyes of 12 pounds or more in the last two weeks, one from N. Long Lake and three from Gull Lake, the largest at 12-4. Seven northerns over 20 pounds were registered, the largest at 24-4 speared by Ken Franzen, Brainerd, at Gull Lake.

80 years ago (1941)

Three robberies and several misdemeanors were solved today with the confession of Charles Kalland of West Front Street. He admitted breaking into the Wall Street Cafe and stealing merchandise, and the Farm Service Store where he stole knives. He stole rugs from the home of E.B. Sullivan.

100 years ago (1921)

The Gregory Park skating rink had nearly 200 skaters on its smooth surface Sunday afternoon. The park board furnished the site, water and light board the water and fire department the hose. An effort will be made to turn on the light at the grandstand for night skating. W. H. Cleary put on his skates for the first time in 25 years, and did well.
