Gas prices in the area took a significant jump yesterday, mirroring fuel cost increases from a year ago. Several gas stations increased prices from $1.44 to $1.63 per gallon overnight. Last January, gas prices rose from $1.20 to $1.39, eventually topping out in the $2.00 range by mid-summer.

Julie Beasley won the vault with a 9.65 and was fifth in the all-around with 36.25 as Brainerd finished fifth at the 16-team Eden Prairie Invitational gymnastics meet. Missy McCollough was fourth on vault with a 9.35. “I don't ever recall placing individuals down here,” said Warrior coach Dave Maras.

A letter from Judge Darrell Sears to asst. county attorney Bob Kautz said he would no longer require restitution for bad checks from outside the county. The move was variously called “dumb,” “inviting trouble,” and “probably unconstitutional.” Kautz said his office opened 210 bad check files in 1978 and 700 in 1980.
60 years ago (1961)
On Thanksgiving Day 24 years ago, Harold Peterson, then 15, was shot in the face by a .25-.35 bullet while hunting on the family Nokay Lake farm. The bullet lodged in his neck near the spine and it was too dangerous to remove. Recently he noticed a sore throat. Then yesterday while at the American Legion he coughed, and coughed-up the bullet.
80 years ago (1941)
After a two-point win, 37-35 the previous night over Staples, Brainerd had an even closer shave last night, pulling out a one-point win over C-I, 28-27. Trailing 24-14 going into the fourth quarter, the Warriors outscored the Rangers 14-3 for the final margin. Gene Brandt again led all scorers with 11 points.
100 years ago (1921)
An Army Field Clerk has been in the city the past two days giving out the Victory Medal to those who served in the World War. Veterans should hurry in as the clerk will leave for Duluth in two days time. The medal is of beautiful bronze composition, about 1.5 inches in diameter and suspended from the service ribbon.
