(Photo) An eighth-grader who says she doesn't like to spell received top honors in the Brainerd School District Spelling Bee. Kirsten Newstrom from Franklin Junior High said she was surprised. “My friends are better spellers than I am,” she said. The only word she spelled incorrectly was “diphtheria.”

30 years ago (1991)

(Photo) Jeremy Neyens, a fifth-grader at Riverside Elementary, gets a boost from his classmates this morning to help put up yellow ribbons in a schoolyard tree in honor of Brainerd area servicemen and women serving in the Gulf War. The ribbon was obtained from the Gulf Support Group.

40 years ago (1981)

Brainerd's record of never having lost a dual wrestling meet to St. Cloud Apollo is intact. The Warriors amassed a 24-point lead after five matches and stormed to their 11th straight victory over the Eagles, 37-17. Bruce Thompson's matmen are now 3-0 in the conference and 7-2-1 overall.

60 years ago (1961)

Cadet Colonel Lawrence Karnowski, of Brainerd, will lead the 1,750 person Cadet Wing from the Air Force Academy as they march in the inaugural parade for Pres. Kennedy on Jan. 20. He is the son of the Joe Karnowskis of Brainerd and is a 1953 graduate of Washington High School.

80 years ago (1941)

Mrs. Florence Grimson of Brainerd is seeking damages of $60,000 from the Hotel Duluth for burns received when her dress caught fire in the hotel's bar. Grimson claims another hotel patron threw a lighted cigarette which ignited her dress during the midwest Shriners council meeting in July.

100 years ago (1921)

The chairman of the county committee for European relief reports that the fund is now over the $2,500 mark. It primarily will go to help displaced and orphan children. This is actual cash money received by the First National Bank and does not include funds raised and sent on by local churches.
