20 years ago (2001)

Concerns about rules for building exteriors in Phase III of the Baxter Industrial Park were questioned by John Sullivan and by Brooke Silvernail of Nor-Son, Inc. Both said they were caught by surprise and Silvernail wondered why the rules hadn't applied to Phase II. The council will have further discussions.

30 years ago (1991)

The Warrior boys' hockey team defeated Alex 3-1 to take the conference title for the first time in 10 years. Ahead 2-1 and looking for an insurance goal, Brian Zierke went behind the Alex net and tried to stuff the puck in. But the puck disappeared. After 30 seconds referees found it under the net lining for the third goal.

40 years ago (1981)

(Photo) A piece of America's military history arrived in Brainerd last week. After a months-long search, the airport commission acquired a U.S. Navy Grumman “Panther” jet to display at the airport entrance. The commission chair, Judge Bob Ryan, flew such jets during the Korean War.

60 years ago (1961)

Scoring victories in all but four weight classes, Brainerd's wrestlers pushed their season record over .500 with a 32-14 win over Staples. Scoring opening pins for the Warriors were Ron Alholm and John Bisek, followed by wins from Jim Borg, John Fruth, Bill Sandison and newly eligible transfer Tim Parker.

80 years ago (1941)

A food stamp plan will be set up in the county in the early spring and will affect every food merchant in the county. The food stamp program will replace the present distribution of relief commodities to the poor. Merchants are not required to join the plan, but most will wish to do so to increase business.

100 years ago (1921)

Everett King, who lives on Garden Lake, just north of Hubert, proved to his friends that he has the strength of a young man, despite his more than 60 years. While spearing on Pelican Lake, he speared a huge pickerel (northern) and fought it for an hour before landing it. It weighed 27 pounds.
