Senior captains Katie Majka and Kyle Goochey capped their careers in school record fashion at the state alpine ski meet at Giants Ridge. Majka finished seventh for the girls; the previous best was 13th by Kellie Burton. Goochey finished 20th for the boys, the highest since the program resumed in 1989-90.

30 years ago (1991)

The Brainerd boys' swim team won its first Section 8 title in program history. Winners were the 400 free relay of Lance Hoff, Mark Schmitz, Dave Wise and Steve Piepgras in 3:19.64; the 200 medley relay of Evan Kaneski, Hoff, Schmitz and Piepgras in a meet record 1:42.4; Hoff 21.64 in the 50 free; and Piepgras 56.98 in the 100 fly.

40 years ago (1981)

Police arrested three juveniles in connection with the estimated $20,000 vandalism to Franklin Junior High. Two of them are students there. In addition, police arrested 22 adults and youngsters in connection with burglary and vandalism in the county, the results of a months-long probe by Brainerd police, the sheriff's office and Crosby police.

60 years ago (1961)

Cadet Lee Anderson, son of the Reuben Andersons of Minneapolis and Nisswa, has been the starting center for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point the past two seasons. Anderson, well known in Nisswa from his summer visits here, will be on TV when Army and Navy clash on Feb. 25.

80 years ago (1941)

A wild and free-scoring game ended in Brainerd's favor last night as the Warriors edged Fergus Falls 51-50. With Brainerd trailing 50-49 and a minute to play, co-captain Ed Marshall stole the ball and raced down the floor for a basket and the lead. Brainerd stalled out the remaining minute.

100 years ago (1921)

Yesterday the weatherman served up a blizzard, but that didn't deter the Elks. Committees worked hard at preparing for the initiation of 70 new members tonight. A great free attraction will be the assembling of six candidates in the display windows of the Northern Home Furnishings Co. where they will be fed in public view.
