Cal Poly senior Chris Bjorklund of Brainerd needs only three points to break the school record, despite getting just four points in a 62-60 win over Cal State-Fullerton. Bjorklund has 1,901 career points and leads the Big West Conference in scoring with 19.0 points per game.

Brainerd's defending champion Kixters finished 5th in the state danceline competition in St. Paul, which was won by St. Cloud Apollo with St. Cloud Tech in 2nd. About 300 Brainerd fans were on hand to cheer on the dancers. Brainerd was state champion in 1981, 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1990. They were 2nd in the other years.

William Hudson, unsuccessful in his bid for county judge, wants to recover more than $6,000 in fees he incurred during the recount that turned the election from him to incumbent Robert Graff. State statute allows for recount costs to be assessed against municipalities where errors occurred that overturned the election.

With star rebounder and scorer Dale Brown on the bench after just five minutes of a foul-filled game, the Warriors' Bob Sheflo filled the void with his best scoring night, 20 points. Bob Rofidal supported him with 17 as Brainerd beat Little Falls 65-55. Referees called 47 fouls in the lengthy contest, including 26 on the host Flyers.
80 years ago (1941)
Brainerd's high school heavyweight boxer, 240-pound Russ Fitzsimmons, lost two fights but is still headed to the National Golden Gloves in Chicago. He lost on points in the semis but broke his opponents nose. Thus, he boxed in the finals, again losing on points. But his opponent decided not to make the Chicago trip, so Russ will go.
100 years ago (1921)
The Brainerd basketball team traveled to Sauk Rapids where that team set a record of scoring nearly a basket a minute and beating the Brainerd team 72 to 9. Sparrow put up 19 baskets for 38 points and Schiborowski had 12 for 24 points. Markham and McKinley each had four points for Brainerd.
