Failing septic systems mean sewer and road improvements, with assessments of $6,600 and $3,200 respectively. Add to that the cost of sewer hookup.

Police Chief Ralph Hitchens will retire as soon as possible as part of an effort to restore harmony in the police department. On a 6-1 vote, the city council accepted Hitchens' offer to retire for payment of salary through Oct. 15, payments to his retirement account and pay for accumulated sick leave. The total is $46,584.
40 years ago (1981)
The Warrior boys' hockey team beat St. Cloud Tech earlier this year 2-1 on a last minute goal. This time they left no doubt, scoring an 8-2 win to claim the outright conference title with an 8-1-1 record. Their overall 17-2-1 record – Brainerd's best ever – gives them the No. 1 seed in the Region 8 tournament.
60 years ago (1961)
The Brainerd basketball team came through with a convincing 69-59 win over visiting Willmar for their 16th consecutive win against no losses. Bob Sheflo had his second 20-point night in a row and Dale Brown put in 22 for the Warriors. The game wasn't as close as the score shows, with Brainerd leading by 22 after three quarters.
80 years ago (1941)
The Hautalas team roared through to victory over the VFW last night, 52 to 33, to take the A League City Basketball title. They finished the season at 6 and 2. The Hautalas rushed out to a 12-4 lead at the first quarter. Lind led all scorers with 15 points on seven fielders and one free throw.
100 years ago (1921)
Brainerd has heard many violinists over the years, but it remained for the Brainerd Musical Club to bring to this city Isador Berger, the greatest of them all. He proved a master of pure, brilliant tone and wonderful technique. Some of the applause was accorded the accompanist, Hebert Carlin.
