20 years ago (2001)

In the final state coaches ranking, the Warrior gymnastic team was rated fifth. But when all the scores were tallied at the state meet, Brainerd finished sixth, tying the highest finish they've had in their 13 trips to state. Brainerd was awarded its lowest point total – 141.85 – since a meet on Jan. 13.

30 years ago (1991)

Ski Gull, Inc., the lakes area's only downhill ski facility, is threatened with loss of its tax exempt status. Tom Burton, president, said the IRS has alleged that benefits of the hill flow to members and businesses and do not qualify as charitable. The ski hill annually hosts over 1,000 6th-graders who learn to ski for free.

40 years ago (1981)

A Hennepin county judge has ruled that 25 area cities and townships will have to pay their share of the $6,278 costs in the Bob Graff-William Hudson election recount. Hudson originally led by 129 votes, but Graf won by 26 on the recount. The judge said it underscores that communities can't be sloppy in counting ballots.

60 years ago (1961)

(Photo) It came harder than expected against a tough Two Harbors team as the Warriors were down in the first quarter and tied at the half 30-30. But Brainerd came through in the end for a 73-62 win, and Brainerd's first-ever unbeaten regular season. Bob Sheflo led all scorers with 25 points.

80 years ago (1941)

More than 600 rounds of heavy ammunition, most of them live shells, were found in shallow water under the Misissippi River bridge. Children from West Brainerd found them and were using them as playthings. They ranged in size up to .50 caliber anti-aircraft shells. Police believe they've recovered all of them but warn parents of potential tragedy.

100 years ago (1921)

Henry Karhunsaari, of Virginia, Minn., improved his claim on the middleweight wrestling championship of the world when he took two of three falls from Young Zbyesko. Karhunsaari used to live in Southeast Brainerd and wrestled several matches in the Park Theatre, including one where he threw his opponent into the seats.
