The Brainerd lakes area is part of a growth corridor that stretches northwest from the Twin Cities along Hwy 10 through St. Cloud. The census population of Brainerd-Baxter is now 18,733, and Crow Wing County has grown 24.5 percent, from 44,249 in 1990 to 55,099 in 2000.
30 years ago (1991)
The Salvation Army is closing in on its fund-raising goal of $405,000 but still needs another $79,000 in pledges to complete its building goal. Capt. Ed Wilson says the money would be used to purchase and renovate the building at 424 Front Street currently housing the State Patrol and Minnegasco.
40 years ago (1981)
The Warrior girls and boys track teams registered a pair of firsts at an indoor meet against St. Cloud Apollo. The boys won 65.5 to 62.5, the first time they had ever beaten the Eagles. The girls' team tied 57-57, the first time they had won or tied the Eagles. Two of the leading athletes were Mark Mathews and Ramona Rugloski.
60 years ago (1961)
(Photo) The only way to remove a 1,000-pound safe from the second floor of the Elks Building was through a window. It was deemed too risky to take down the stairs so it was removed by a crane. The safe had been there 30-40 years and not used the last 10 years. It will be renovated and given to a charitable group.
80 years ago (1941)
Twenty-four residents of the county will petition for their final citizenship papers in the court house on April 1. A man from the naturalization department in Duluth will be here to supervise. There are seven candidates from Brainerd, three from Ironton and eleven from Crosby – plus three holdovers.
100 years ago (1921)
Peter B. Lasher, 72, who passed away at his home at 509 Ninth Ave. NE, is the father of 19 children. After serving with distinction in the Civil War he married Laura, who bore him seven children, of whom four are living. She passed and his new wife, Mary, bore him 12 children, all of whom are living.
