Homeless and neglected animals in the Brainerd area have lost their most ardent supporter. Vicki Peterson, 51, the founder of Heartland Animal Rescue Team (HART), has passed away from a genetic disease of liver and lungs. She started HART in 1987 after seeing a small black dog tied outside in 30 below weather and being unable to save it.

BN Railroad workers went on strike here this morning as the first nationwide rail strike since 1982 got underway. Picket lines went up at the freight office on Front Street, the main gate to the BN shops on E. Washington St. and the side gate on 13th Street. Strikers were happy to talk but did not want their names used.

(Photo) Nikki LeDoux, a Brainerd High School Senior, broke three state records in the Warrior Classic Weightlifting 148-pound division. She shattered records in the bench press, power clean and composite total categories with lifts of 150 and 155 for a 305 total. Curt Henningson set a state record power clean of 200 pounds.

A freakish spring snow storm that roared out of the plains, dropped 8.5 inches of heavy snow on the Brainerd area, closing schools and businesses and cutting attendance at the annual Brainerd Armory Boat Show to almost zero. C. Homer Whiting, area forester, said the bright side is the snow will cut down on spring fire danger.
80 years ago (1941)
Skipper, pet dog of the Kenneth Codner family, doesn't like being confined to the car even for a good cause. Placed there while Mrs. Codner was cleaning house, Skipper put his paws on the car horn. No reaction from the Codners. So, Skipper placed his paws on the horn and kept them there. He was quickly released.
100 years ago (1921)
The Ransford Hotel is making preparations for every kind of convenience for coming host of summer tourists. George Stein will start a taxi service at the Ransford on May 1. A manicurist and hair salon will be added soon. And a shoe shining parlor is to be added.
