20 years ago (2001)

Teen pregnancy in Crow Wing County has dropped 46 percent since 1992, according to Cheryl Craig, the teen pregnancy prevention coordinator. She told the county board that the program started when it was discovered the county's rate ranked sixth in the state. Now, the county ranks in the mid-30s.

30 years ago (1991)

Alexandria and Rocori were touted preseason as two of the better baseball teams in the CLC. Both now have the distinction of losing to Brainerd in the early season. It was Jeff Imsande's three-hit relief pitching that led Brainerd to its 7-4 win over Rocori, as it improved its season record to 3-2.

40 years ago (1981)

(Photo) Tuesday Morning Doubles League champs at Pauline's Lanes are Goodie Schmitz and Sue Kieffer, the first new league champs in four years. An amazing feature is that both are normal righthanders, but switched to bowling left-handed due to injuries. Ms. Schmitz received an award for raising her average by 19 pins.

80 years ago (1941)

He has to turn his head a little to hear you, and his legs bother him a little, but Elias Fenstermacher, 91, says he's “almost as active” as when he was a 15-year-old in the Union cavalry. He's the last surviving Brainerd citizen who served in the Civil War, and he plans to be active in Memorial Day services.

100 years ago (1921)

Two men nearly died while waterproofing the inside of the concrete tank in the new water tower. Overcome by fumes, one managed to crawl to the top and make his way down the stairs. He alerted a stucco crew that his partner was still inside. They got the fire department who were able to rescue the second man. Both are in serious condition.
