Lisa Renneke and Trevor McCulloch were named Athletes of the Year at the Warrior All-Sports Banquet last night. Renneke, who starred in volleyball, basketball and golf, will play golf in college. McCulloch was in track and field, qualified for the state wrestling tournament and was all-state in football. He will will play at the Univ. of Minn.
30 years ago (1991)
County attorney Jack Graham and the city of Brainerd are at an impasse over who will prosecute misdemeanor crimes. For years the county attorney has done so in agreement with the city. When Graham took office, he said he couldn't prosecute misdemeanors unless the county board gave him another assistant, which it won't do.
40 years ago (1981)
John Rieck, convicted of firebombing a home in 1977, was in court to protest that his sentence was too long, claiming the rules were changed after his conviction. Judge Clint Wyant said Rieck had added up the wrong numbers. Wyant said the sentence was not only correct, but under new guidelines it could have been 15 years longer.

With a touch of chivalry, Brainerd police declined to name the woman in this story. She stepped out of her house for a moment, with the door closing and locking on her skirt. She was trapped. A passing motorist called police, who broke a front window, boosted a young boy through it, and he opened the door, freeing the woman's skirt.
80 years ago (1941)
“Camp Clyde” will soon be the rendezvous for the Boy Scouts of the Central Minnesota Council. The new site on North Long Lake northeast of Brainerd was named in honor of Clyde Parker, who donated the land. He is president of the Brainerd Lions, who will join with other Lions clubs to raise funds for buildings and equipment.
100 years ago (1921)
The drawing in the big Elks Lodge prize contest was held at 8 p.m. April 30. The first prize, a Ford sedan, was won by Mrs. William Gustafson. Crowds were lined up for two blocks around the Elks club. Tickets were mixed in an electric washer, with winners drawn by the mayor's little daughter.
