Brainerd High School grads Chris Studer and Russ Langer are ripping the baseball for South Dakota State this season. Against Minn.-Morris, Studer hit his 9th homer of the year and Langer hit his 8th. Overall, Langer is batting .352, with 10 doubles and 29 RBI. Studer is hitting .330, with nine doubles and 27 RBI.

Curbside recycling for the city appears more likely now that the county has appropriated $49,000 for a pilot program, although the city will have to adopt a plan. City administrator Dan Vogt said funding had been a problem, but the county money will help. The only plan thus far is one drawn up by a consortium of local waste haulers.

The city council has voted 6-1 in favor of a motion endorsing the positive economic impact of Brainerd International Raceway on the area. The vote came after listening to arguments on both sides of the raceway noise issue. The action could carry weight at the state Senate, which is considering a bill that would exempt BIR from noise laws.

Four consistent games of 199, 198, 185 and 185 – plus 100 pins handicap – gave Val Collette of Brainerd the first prize of $50 in the first Lake Region Handicap Classic bowling tourney. Collette, who bowls in Brainerd's Straight-Away League, was in the last shift on Saturday night.
