Steve Mick, of Baxter, debated for months whether to propose to his girl, Teri Dahlberg, St. Cloud, in a private romantic setting or go public in a big way. Mick, who is active in theater and choral work, decided on the latter. At a choir concert he sang a solo, then dropped to one knee and proposed to her in front of 150 people. She said yes.
30 years ago (1991)
The Brainerd Water and Light Dept. reported someone broke into their storage yard and stole cable and several coils of copper wire. Supt. Walt Sjolund said they will have to do an inventory to determine extent of the loss. He said thieves would have needed a truck or trailer to haul away the items.
40 years ago (1981)
Just days after vandals broke off seven Norway pine trees near 7th and Laurel Streets, they struck again yesterday, breaking off the tops of two more trees. The trees, planted in the 1976 beautification, were flourishing. A reward is being offered through Crime Stoppers for information leading to arrest and conviction.

Gordon Brown, Brainerd, a 19-year-old sophomore at the Univ. of Minn., was one of eight finalists from 3,000 entries who won a $3,000 auto design scholarship sponsored by Motor Trend magazine. He'll use the money to attend the Art Center in Los Angeles for a degree in Industrial Design.
80 years ago (1941)
(Photo) Marion Finkie, 19, of Brainerd, lost no time taking the spotlight when the trout fishing season opened yesterday. Fishing in Whitely Creek, just off the road, he caught this 5-5 German brown trout on a fly rod using worms as bait. The fish broke his rod at the tip, “but,” Marion says, “it was worth it.”
100 years ago (1921)
Francis J. Britton has returned from Gull Lake where he has finished building a summer home for E.P. Slipp. It is a four-room cottage with a fine interior finish. A garage was also built. It is located north of the Barrows home and near that of W.A.M. Johnson.
