20 years ago (2001)

Described by local residents as the worst mess they've ever seen, all the garbage left on Mille Lacs Lake by ice fishermen has washed on shore in Garrison Bay. It included wooden blocks, butane lighters, pieces of Styrofoam, propane cylinders, plastic pails, tobacco cans, beer and pop cans, clothing, road signs, two full-size telephone poles and much more.

30 years ago (1991)

The city council has decided to handle its own misdemeanor prosecutions instead of relying on the county attorney's office. The council will advertise for attorneys who may wish to contract for these part-time services. Brainerd will also contact Baxter and Nisswa to see if they are interested in cooperating on prosecutions.

40 years ago (1981)

The Warrior softball team punched out five hits and only gave up six to Alexandria, but a 13-run sixth inning by Alex led to a 20-2 loss. The key factor was pitching, where Brainerd gave up 21 walks. That crucial sixth inning featured 11 walks, numerous wild pitches and an error.

60 years ago (1961)

80 years ago (1941)

(Photo) The Dispatch lost its first employee to the U.S. Army when Lester Volkl, 25-year-old printer, answered the call as a draftee. Shown at left in the photo, Volkl will stay in touch with the Dispatch by writing periodic articles on life in an army camp. The articles will be printed under his byline.

The other draftee is Howard Halvorson.

100 years ago (1921)

The “Jollies of 1921,” the minstrel show with local talent put on by the Elks Lodge, had another good attendance on Saturday night and received much applause and commendation. A delegation of Elks from Little Falls attended and, after the performance, drove back to Little Falls with the director as the show will open there in mid-May.
