20 years ago (2001)

A proposed development on Briarwood Drive in Baxter will be on hold pending an environmental assessment. The Baxter council ordered the study done for the Jasper Heights development due to the possibility of habitat for the Blanding's turtle. The turtle is a state listed threatened species.

30 years ago (1991)

Big Island in Whitefish Lake, the county's least disturbed piece of real estate, will be declared a scientific and natural area if the DNR has its way. The county board will have to approve as most of the island is tax forfeited. It is a classic example of a climax forest – a forest in its final stage of development.

40 years ago (1981)

Bigger fish were caught this week, but none so surprising as the 7-4 walleye taken by Kenny Falk, 8, of St. Paul. Fishing from a pontoon on little White Sand Lake in Baxter, he weighed it at nearby Jim Finch's bait-tackle store. His uncle, Jim Klein, said: “Never guessed there was a fish that big in the lake.”

60 years ago (1961)

Voters will decide the fluoridation issue in the December election here, the city council decided last night when for the second time a delegation from the Joint Service Clubs Committee appeared in support. A week ago the Water and Light Board had tabled the issue without recommending an election.

80 years ago (1941)

(Photo) A Luscumbe single-seater airplane somersaulted onto its back during an attempted take-off at the Brainerd Airport at noon. The new plane, flown by a Dallas couple, struck a marker at the edge of the field. Pilot H. R. Gibson received injuries requiring medical care but, miraculously, his wife was uninjured.

100 years ago (1921)

Klinton Quinlin, an employee of the Alderman-Maghan Co. store, is recovering from a severe wound received while shooting a Colt revolver at Crosby. The .32 automatic was accidentally discharged while at target practice and the bullet ranged through his leg, coming within an inch of a vital point.
