Francie Larrieu Smith, world renowned runner and former Olympian, will participate in the Susan G. Kommen Race for the Cure on July 1. She will compete in the 5K run. There is also a 5K walk and 1 mile walk. Larrieu Smith competed in five Olympics, won 21 national titles and set 35 American records in running.

(Photo) Walt Konen, building supervisor for the Crow Wing County Historical Museum, moves a water cooler jar filled with 25,000 pennies, contributed by visitors to the museum. The museum has set a goal of two million pennies to be collected by the end of 1991.
40 years ago (1981)
After two hearings in two counties over 13-hours, an emotionally-drained Tim Rosenberger was returned to the Warrior baseball team following a 3-2 vote of the school board. The controversial “being in the presence of” alcohol rule was also dropped. His father, Tom, called it a victory, while board members said this tells students rules can be ignored.

(Photo) One of the 12 finalists for the Miss Minnesota title will be Kaye Jeanne Hill, Miss Brainerd, who will ride in the pageant parade in this baby blue convertible. With Hill are Jaycee president Joe DeRosier, Pat Cummings, pageant chairman, and Warren VanderLinden, who with his wife will act as chaperones.
80 years ago (1941)
Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Davis, of N. 9th Street, have four sons in military service. Sgt. Francis Davis, 35, is with Co. A, 194th Tank Regiment now training at Camp Lewis, Wash. His brother, Corp. Walter Davis, 21, is also there as first cook. PFC Arden Davis, 22, is stationed in Nova Scotia, and Pvt. Kenneth Davis, 20, is in the Philippines.

Early this afternoon tickets were being exchanged for reserved seats for tonight's commencement exercise for Brainerd High School being held at the New Park Theatre. There will be 61 students graduating. Speaker will be Theda Gildemeister, instructor at Winona Normal School and president of the Minn. Educational Assn.
