20 years ago (2001)

Joe Sauers went to Central Lakes College not knowing what to expect from the men's golf team. But the freshman probably didn't expect to be the national NJCAA Div. III individual champ, after carding a 74 for a four-day total of 296. And the CLC team did well, finishing third. As coach Jim Russell said, this will definitely boost our program.

30 years ago (1991)

Brainerd racers Tim O'Brien and Greg Tomberlin won their first races of the season at North Central Speedway. O'Brien, the defending points champ, won the Wissota Super Stock feature. Tomberlin, a veteran ice racer, earned his first Mini Stock feature, outdueling Mike Killian of St. Cloud.

40 years ago (1981)

The Mayor's Forum on Vandalism endorsed a proposal to obtain better lighting for both retail and residential areas after learning that more lights have reduced vandalism up to 92 percent in cities like Brainerd. Members will approach businesses first with the idea before seeking support from the public.

60 years ago (1961)

The Minn. National Guard warns that three “dud” tank shells are missing from Camp Ripley following a firing exercise by the 194th Armor Battalion. The three live shells, believed to have been taken by visitors, were stored in a safe ammo dump. If you know of these shells you should contact Camp Ripley immediately.

80 years ago (1941)

Mrs. Charles West, Irondale Twp., was levied total fines of $200 in municipal court. Her first fine was $100 for selling liquor without a license. Her second fine was also $100, for selling beer to a minor. The court has agreed to take both fines under advisement.

100 years ago (1921)

Open since May 15, the the fishing seasons for pike, pickerel, crappies and sunfish have furnished sport and food for hundreds the past three weeks. On June 15 the season for casting for “the king of the sweet waters” will commence as fishermen for large and small mouth bass end their wait.
